What is a Final Girl, by definition?
TV Tropes describes a Final Girl as: “The simplest definition of this is “the last character left alive to confront the killer” in a Slasher Movie. The character in question tends to follow a certain set of characteristics. The most obvious one is being (almost) Always Female (Men Are the Expendable Gender after all). Especially in older works, she’ll also almost certainly be a virgin, remain fully clothed, avoid sex (because Sex Signals Death), and probably won’t drink alcohol, smoke tobacco, or take drugs, either. Finally, she’ll probably turn out to be more intelligent and resourceful than the other victims, occasionally even evolving into a type of Action Girl by the movie’s end.”
Patricia from Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay (Played by Kate O’Flynn) is the ultimate Final Girl. She’s informed, she’s capable, and the status of Final Girl perfectly fits her story arc within the nine episodes of Widow’s Bay we’ve seen thus far. Horror media has archetypes that many of us know well, the Final Girl being one of them. But Patricia falls into the category closer to Erin of You’re Next or Grace from Ready or Not, much to viewer’s delight. It makes it much easier to root for someone who we as an audience can identify with, beliving that we would also do the “smart” thing in their situation.
My favorite horror media always has genre aware characters. Now, you may be asking, “Hannah, what’s a genre aware character?” A genre aware character is someone who knows what genre their story falls under. Patricia KNOWS Widow’s Bay has Something Wrong(TM) with it. So when her bedroom door is found mostly closed in episode eight (when she knows she left it open), she immediately knows it’s because something is wrong. She survived the Boogeyman before by hiding under her bed, so it tracks that he would be in her bedroom, waiting for her, this time. It speaks to years of Patricia fearing his return. She mentions in an earlier episode sleeping with her dresser in front of the door in fear that he should ever return.
In one of my favorite scenes of the show, Patricia also stays ready at every turn to provide a double-tap if needed, until the Boogeyman is a smoldering pile of ashes, fresh from the incinerator. The moment serves a dual purpose: it provides a bit of comedic relief after the stress marathon of watching Patricia run across the Island, and it shows her true Final Girl status. She stays on him until the very, very end. The entire sequence conjures a voice from the back of my head, reciting one of the cardinal rules of scary movies: the killer always comes back for one, final scare. The audience expects this, but, thankfully, so does Patricia.
Patricia is an outcast, as displayed in episode four of Widow’s Bay, “Beach Reads”. The ladies at the get together she attends are rude to her pretty much from the get-go, even when she’s just trying her best to socialize. When someone finally asks her about what happened with the Boogeyman, of course she’s going to talk about it, because someone finally asked her a question. She’s especially going to talk about it because this new person, who’s NOT from the island, won’t have the inherent bias against her that the other women all seem to harbor. Unfortunately for Patricia, this potential new friend is poisoned against her immediately.
Episode four is my favorite episode of the season thus far, because it’s the first time we get to see Patricia take action rather than be a bystander in the story. She takes steps to read the mysterious “self-help” book to improve her social standing. While this has some quite unexpected and unintended results, the ending of the episode also shows us more of Patricia’s capabilities. She doesn’t hesitate to stick her hand in the bonfire if it means destroying the evil book and ending the trance the partygoers have fallen into. She also doesn’t mind taking the blame for all of the attendees wading into the water, it’s easier to stand there and take the verbal abuse than to explain the evil book situation to everyone and sound even crazier, especially when the crowd is already primed to disbelieve her in general.
Patricia also deftly handles things behind the scenes while Mayor Tom Loftis is going through his unintended drug trip in episode five, “What to Expect on Your Trip”. In a moment of pure comedy, we realize she’s kept him on a dog leash to keep him nearby. It was also her idea to try to communicate with the long-buried Richard Warren via pen and paper, since he’d only talk with the “Lord Island Protector” AKA The Mayor, Tom Loftis.
Patricia has had a rough go of it not just the entire series, but most of her life, from the looks of things. Constantly ignored, belittled, and doubted by her classmates, it’s not easy being Patricia. Thankfully for viewers, Patricia does not let this get her down. Especially not when things are at their most dangerous. While we do receive the reveal that Patricia lied about getting the same calls from the Boogeyman as the other victims she attended school with, we as viewers feel righteous vindication on Patricia’s behalf when she finally tases her antagonist.
Oh no, I’m not talking about the Boogeyman. I’m talking about Kris (played wonderfully by Lauren Bittner), who has given us mean girl energy from the beginning. Although we do also get the satisfaction of watching Patricia use her wits to take down the Boogeyman once and for all, dare I say it was more satisfying watching Kris fall to the floor after taking a taser to the torso. I for one have been screaming since episode four for Patricia to hit her, so the tasing is a very welcome comedic moment of comeuppance within the terror she endures during episode eight.
Patricia follows the rocky path from wallflower to final girl over the course of nine episodes of Apple TV’s Widow’s Bay. It is a sight to see, with pivotal turning points in episodes Four and Eight. One of the best parts is, her narrative feels less like a total transformation and more like a revelation of what was always inside her: a badass survivor. Socially inept? Sure. But also strong, prepared, and unafraid to take action, no matter what craziness comes her way.
If you’re not watching Widow’s Bay, you should be. The Apple TV series was recently renewed for Season 2, and the penultimate episode of season 1 comes out this Wednesday, June 17th 2026.
